L. Parker Stephenson Photographs is pleased to announce its upcoming exhibition of Yuichi Hibi’s most recent series, Greetings From... Shanghai. We hope you will join us for the opening on Thursday, March 11th, from 6 to 8pm.

Yuichi Hibi (b. 1964, Japan), who has been living in New York since 1988, spent five days and nights in 2007 photographing in the narrow alleyways and dim interiors of Shanghai’s old neighborhoods.

This city, where the future is launching itself from the past, challenged him to uncover its rapidly shrinking history. And he did: the street vendor partially hidden behind the steam of his dumplings; a father and son, seen from the behind, pondering plucked foul in a store window; a noodle dish being gobbled up by a man in an antique store; a light bulb dangling mysteriously in the street; and the ubiquitous backdrop of the checkered facade of a crumbling building haunted by faint skyscrapers in the distant sky. Although foreign, the sounds, smells and sights comforted him and, to his surprise evoked a longing for roots and a connection to time gone by.

Hibi has, in a nod to the photographic and historical pasts, printed these images on expired photographic paper. The dreamlike haze from the streets of Shanghai is transported to the physical paper in dusky hues of grey.

A catalogue in a limited edition of 250 accompanies the exhibition. This, as well as a special edition of 15 with a print, are available at the gallery along with Hibi’s previous books Imprint (2005) and Neco (2008).

In conjunction with AIPAD’s Photography Show, we will be presenting a selection of works from our European partner gallery, Fifty One Fine Art Photography, including vintage and modern prints by Seydou Keita, Jan Yoors, Malick Sidibé, Masahisa Fukase, Jean Dominique Burton, and Kyungwoo Chun.

For more information on these artists or for visuals, please contact the gallery at 212.517.8700 or visit us online at www.lparkerstephenson.nyc. L. Parker Stephenson Photographs is open by appointment Monday through Saturday.
