Atwood’s Rue des Lombard series (1976-1977)
This, Atwood’s first in depth series, explores a close knit community of prostitutes in Paris whom she visited daily over the course of a year. The legal precariousness and social intimacy of this group’s activities lie in contrast with their public presence and display. The camera became a tool to articulate her fascination with this duality, engaging with it as a witness: “I wanted to look but I didn’t want to stare”
